We can arrange a private tour any day and time we are available, and for any sort of group including: hen party; stag party; birthdays; work night’s out; team-building groups; corporate visitors or entertainment; reunions; charity groups; educational groups from primary to college / university level; or just a group of friends or family.
Take a walk with us as we discuss some murders and crimes of passion from the 1800’s and earlier. Who is guilty, who is innocent, and who got away with murder?
If murder is your ‘thing’ – this is the tour for you. Suitable for most walking abilities, but there are around 15 stairs to walk up and about 30 stairs leading down to ground level halfway through the tour (with handrails), so please bear this in mind when booking.
Here’s what some of our past guests said about Crimes of Passion:
The tour lasts for approximately 1hr, and will run regardless of the weather. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. See our full terms and conditions for more information.
|START/END LOCATION||Outside Dundee Contemporary Arts, Nethergate / Barrack St, at Howff cemetery|
|DEPARTURE TIME||Please arrive 5 minutes before your tour begins for a prompt departure.|
|TOUR LENGTH||Approximately 1 hour|
|WEAR||Comfortable clothing, preferably waterproof!|
The tour starts just outside the entrance to Dundee Contemporary Arts, which is on the Nethergate at the bottom of South Tay St. There are coffee shops including a branch of Henry’s across the road serving hot drinks you can take on the tour with you on cold nights!
Arriving by car:
You will have to consider if you want to park at the end and walk to the start point (please allow time to arrive for the tour start time), or park near the start point and walk back at the end, or maybe somewhere in the middle!
The map below details available parking points in red, including on street parking zones and nearest car parks.
Parking is free on street and in most council car parks (check signs for parking charging times) after 6 pm. If your tour starts at 6.15 pm this is ample time to park and arrive in time for the tour. Parking charges and length of stay may apply if parking before 6 pm, see street or car park signs for details.
Arriving by bus/train:
The closest bus stops to the start point are on Nethergate, although the start point is within 2 minutes walk of the city centre bus stop for each route in the city.
The start point is also just a short 3 minute walk from Dundee train station.
The start point of the tour is on a flat paved surface, starting outside the DCA on Nethergate, from there we cross the road and walk up South Tay St, stopping at the top of that street. We then walk across the double crossing on Marketgait, and around Argyle St to North Lindsay St. From here we ascend a slight hill to get to the Courthouse on Bell Street.
At this point there is a flight of around 15 stairs up and back down them, followed by around 30 stairs down to ground level. We then continue on to the Howff cemetery, where there are cobbled paths and uneven surfaces. There is also a lip on the gate getting into and out of the cemetery of around 1-2”. There are also several roads to cross where there are no crossings.
The tour mostly takes places close to busy main roads which can create a lot of background traffic noise, especially during busy hours. There are no jump out scares on the tour, just all the good grisly parts of our history told by our local guides, with a few laughs along the way.
If you have any queries or concerns about accessibility on this tour please get in touch with us.
*We can alter the route of this tour to include no stairs or steps for wheelchair or walking aid users, however we can only arrange this for private tours so please get in touch as this considerably adds to the length of this tour and it is a particularly long route compared to out other tours as it is!
